Proposals submitted for new car park for University Hospitals of the North Midlands

University Hospitals of the North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust has now submitted proposals for a new staff car park at Grindley Hill Court.

The new car park will replace the existing staff spaces provided at the Royal Infirmary and Central Outpatients Department sites, with the former soon to be developed for much-needed local housing and community services.

The Trust has chosen to develop car parking on the Grindley Hill Court site because it was considered the best local option for future expansion of hospital services given its location next to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Lorraine Whitehead, Director of Estates, Facilities and PFI at the Trust, said: “We are very pleased that our plans for a new car park have now been submitted to the council. After a period of public consultation, we’re confident that our proposals will improve NHS facilities for staff, enable better car parking for our patients and allow for the redevelopment of the Royal Infirmary site.

“Our proposals are also an important part of Project STAR, UHNM’s regeneration programme which aims to ‘power-up’ Stoke-on-Trent and transform local NHS services in the post-covid era.”

The Trust’s submission for car parking plans can now be viewed on the Local Planning Authority (LPA) portal.

What's happening at the Royal Infirmary site?

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has now completed the demolition of the old Royal Infirmary site.

The site has not been used for NHS clinical services since 2012, when the hospital closed and services were transferred to the new Royal Stoke University Hospital. The demolition is the next step in a major programme to transform this part of the city. The Trust’s aim is to sell the redundant site for housing which will help to regenerate of this part of Stoke.

In 2014 UHNM secured outline planning permission for the demolition of old buildings on the Royal Infirmary site and the development of up to 236 new homes, some amenity greenspace and up to 500 square metres of community or retail space.

Both the Royal Infirmary site and the COPD site continue to be used for staff car parking.
