Working with our communities

The Project STAR team is now meeting regularly with local councillors and the chairs of local residents’ associations to discuss the project's communications.

Working alongside this group, the Trust is communicating through various local newsletters, the Penkhull Residents Association Facebook Page and the Hartshill residents Facebook page.

The Trust would like to thank the community communications group for their continued support of Project STAR. If you would be interested in joining the monthly community communications meeting, please get in touch with us here.

Integrated Health Projects at Grindley Hill Court

As part of their commitment to social value and supporting the communities in which they are working, IHP has been working alongside local people throughout works at Grindley Hill.

  • Build UK’s Open Doors Scheme – 14 March marked Build UK’s ‘Open Doors Scheme’, where building sites across the UK opened to the public so that local people, students, and jobseekers can learn more about the construction industry. At Grindley Hill Court, we were pleased to welcome a host of visitors, including attendees from the Stoke Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Staffordshire County Council and teachers from Thistley Hough Secondary School.

  • Community Café – The team at IHP have been dropping into the weekly community café at the Penkhull Village Hall to enjoy a ‘cuppa and catch-up’ with local people. We’re pleased to report that we’ve got a long list of satisfied customers who will be returning for the lemon meringue pies and oatcakes!

  • Willows Primary School Project – Working in conjunction with Willows Primary School, IHP is pleased to share artwork from pupils at Willows Primary School at Grindley Hill Court, on the theme ‘What makes Stoke great?’ The banner showcasing the childrens’ creations has now been erected on the site barrier.

  • Work experience for local people – The team at IHP has exceeded its employment opportunities target, delivering over 90 opportunities for local people, despite planning only 25. The contractors have welcomed Charlie for his one-year university placement, together with new apprentice Joe, who has started his degree as part of his technical apprenticeship progression with IHP.

  • Inspiring the Future Scheme – IHP has become part of the Inspiring the Future Scheme, which sees the contractor partner with local schools to educate children and young people about careers in construction.

  • Supporting students with career prospectsIn August, two local students started work experience at the Grindley Hill site, meaning four pupils have now undertaken placements at the car park development. The contractors are also connecting with local employment services to support sustainable careers in construction, and are providing insight to the local community about the diverse set of roles available.

  • Stand Out Make a Difference (SOMAD) Day - IHP’s Stand Out, Make a Difference days are dedicated volunteering time given to staff members, encouraging them to get involved with local initiatives. 10 members of the Grindley Hill team spent a day helping to improve an area on the hospital grounds, transforming it into a communal green space, and the contractors’ supply chain kindly loaned plant and equipment to further support these activities.

  • Educational activities – Over 300 students have benefitted from educational opportunities offered on site at Grindley Hill, including pupils from Willows Primary School, Thistley Hough Secondary School, and Sir Graham Balfour Secondary School. Activities with the local secondary schools have included confidence-building CV workshops and provision of insight into the industry.
