University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust has received planning permission to develop a new staff car park at Grindley Hill Court. Construction of the car park has now begun and is due for completion in early May 2024.

Watch: UHNM’s plans for staff car parking

Grindley Hill Court will provide a permanent car parking solution for the NHS staff currently parking on the Old Infirmary and COPD site, with the former potentially being developed for local housing and community facilities following the demolition of both sites’ disused and dilapidated buildings.

The Trust chose to acquire Grindley Hill Court, which sits adjacent to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, because it was considered the best local option for future expansion of hospital services and, earlier this year, it was granted public funding to purchase the land.

Grindley Hill Court previously housed NHS staff, including temporary and part-time staff, who have now vacated the site so the land may be readied for demolition. The Trust has been assisting these residents in their move, including support in removals and finding alternative accommodation.

Lorraine Whitehead, Director of Estates, Facilities and PFI at the Trust, has said: “We are delighted to receive approval from Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a new staff car park at Grindley Hill Court. Not only will it improve NHS facilities for our staff, but it allows us to move forward with exciting plans to redevelop the Infirmary site for possible housing and community facilities.”

The Trust’s new car park, and its wider ambitions for the Infirmary and COPD sites, are an important part of Project STAR, UHNM’s regeneration programme which aims to ‘power-up’ this part of Stoke-on-Trent in the post-Covid era.

UHNM is committed to engaging with local residents and stakeholders throughout the demolition and development phases, and will ensure that any queries are addressed by a member of its dedicated project team.
